Coastal Adventure from Altnahabradhan Mill to Lochinver (via Achmelvich)

The start of the walk, heading down to the mill.

This walk starts close to Stoer Bay Chalets, just along the road on the other side of Clachtoll. More information on the first half can be found on the walkhighland website and the second on the Highland council site – just google the walks.

If you fancy a day on foot that mixes quiet coves, turquoise seas, and a friendly Highland village, this route is perfect. Starting at Altnahabradhan Mill, you’ll follow a beautiful coastal path to Achmelvich, then link onto the Achmelvich–Lochinver trail for an unforgettable day out. If you are feeling very adventurous you can return the same way (approximately 4 hrs all round at a steady adult pace)

Altnahabradhan to Achmelvich

From the small parking area at Altnahabradhan, head towards the ruined grain mill. You’ll spot several old millstones lying around — a reminder of the days when this building bustled with activity. There’s an interpretation board here if you want to read into its history.

Before starting the climb, it’s worth detouring down to the shore —  It’s peaceful and often empty, the kind of spot you could linger at for hours….and perfect for a wee dip on the return journey.

From the bay, follow the path back past the mill and cross the stream via the stepping stones. Climb  uphill towards a large modern house, skirting to the left, and soak up the magnificent views back towards the coast.

The path runs parallel to a road for a short section before you turn right, crossing over near a cluster of holiday cottages. If you are feeling extra adventurous this is a good start point if going by MTB.

From here, the trail undulates over grassy coastal hills, through a tiny gate in a drystone wall, and finally descends with beautiful views of Achmelvich Bay — a real showstopper on a sunny day, but can be very busy and noisy in the summer months.
This stretch one way is approximately 3 km/ 1.85 miles.

Achmelvich to Lochinver

After exploring Achmelvich’s famous white sands, follow the tarred road through the until you reach the signposted path for Baddidarrach. This  route winds through Ardroe, opening up views over the sea loch, before descending into Lochinver.

The entire walk — Altnahabradhan to Achmelvich and then on to Lochinver — takes about 4 hours return at a steady pace. If you’re on a mountain bike, it’s a fun ride too, with only possibly  only a couple of short push-or-carry sections.

This walk is the perfect way to experience the wild beauty of Assynt — starting in solitude, passing through stunning beaches, and ending in a lively village where you can treat yourself to a well-earned coffee or ice cream.
